What is a Sol-Gel?

- a porous, transparent glass that is cast from solution

at room temperature

Properties:

1. Low temperature processing allows entrapment of

indicator chemicals without degradation

2. Ability to tailor refractive index, thickness and porosity

of the final material through chemical processing/curing

3. Low cost and robust
